Positive affirmation is about thinking positively, believing in yourself and that you’ll get what you want; it is key to a healthy and happy mindset. Affirmations are extremely powerful and doing them daily will change your life. If you don’t use them, I understand why you may not think they are that important, but they aren’t a gimmick, they really do work and they really can completely turn your life around. You may not realize it but we are doing affirmations everyday anyway but when you fully understand what affirmations are and the power behind them you can chose to make a conscious effort to make sure the affirmations you are saying are positive ones and not negative ones.
Definition of affirmation: the action or process of affirming something or being affirmed.
Definition of affirm: to state as a fact; assert strongly and publicly.
Experts estimate the mind thinks an average of 2100 – 3,300 thoughts an hour. Whether you believe that’s true or not, you know yourself we are constantly thinking. When you wake up on a Monday morning and think “I hate Mondays, I hate work” you are doing the opposite to positive affirmations, you are affirming to yourself that you “hate Mondays” and that you “hate work” and by doing so setting yourself up for a miserable day. When athletes use positive self talk it boosts their performance, whereas negative self talk can ruin their performance. Going out onto the field thinking ‘I am going to win. My team is the best. We’ve got this’ doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to win every single match but they will feel good about it, confident, they’ll feel pumped up and ready to go, and will stand a better chance of winning than if they went out thinking ‘I am a rubbish player, my team is lousy, we are going to lose again’. The best chance to win is by thinking positively, believing in yourself and that you’ll get a good result.
Affirmations can actually be about anything. For them to work you just need to do it regularly and you need to really mean it. If you have an unstoppable mindset you are going to be much happier in life. If you haven’t, you really need to put in the effort to change it. You are the only person who has the power to do this. Positive affirmations help you to view things in a different way. When you change the way you think, it changes the way you feel. That doesn’t mean you should start lying to yourself. You can’t wake up and think ‘oh yay it’s Monday, I love work’ You can’t trick your brain. Remember it’s not just about thinking it, its about really believing it. But what you can do, is when you notice yourself thinking negatively, first stop yourself and change it for something positive that you can or do believe. So if you hate Monday mornings and aren’t looking forward to the day at work here are some examples of positive affirmations you can try:
